The community front page should have an additional action box that has a link to the LeMill IRC channel in the form of irc://irc.freenode.net/lemill

The box should also have a link to a Java or Flash based IRC client.

It is shown both to logged in users and anonymous users.

IRC is too geeky for our target group. Most of the teachers with advanced computer skills I know are just starting to use communication tools like Skype.

I don't think it's that hard to use. Check out e.g. http://www.ircatwork.com I don't know if the owners would be happy to have a moderate increase in the number of users, though. Also, the channel for users should be on a network which doesn't need authentication.
