Description (last modified by hans) (diff)

Currently collections function as folders where user can add references to content, activities and tools. Inside the collection user can reorder the references. If there are references to objects from all three sections (content, activties, tools) it is possible to write tips for use.

We have discussed several times that we need broad folksonomy to enrich the metadata for learning resources in LeMill. In broad folksonomy many people can tag the same object (as in del.icio.us). Currently we have a narrow folksonomy where only authors can tag the resources. More information about narrow and broad folksonomy: http://www.personalinfocloud.com/2005/02/explaining_and_.html

I propose the following redesign for collections:

  • Rename "Add to collection..." link to "Add bookmark..." in the actions portlet.
  • "Add bookmark" page should have the following elements: title of the resource, tags (input type text), notes (textarea), your tags (all tags used by that user), popular tags (7 most used tags). (more details coming in story #????)
  • Rename "View collections" link to "Tags" in the actions portlet.
  • "Tags" page should have the following elements: tags (tagcloud of all tags attached to the resource by people who have bookmarked the resource), bookmarked by N users (list of users who have bookmarked the resource). When user clicks on some of (more details coming in story #????)
  • Rename "Collections" to "Tags" in the "My content", "My activities" and "My tools" portlets.
  • "My tags" page will show tagclound of all tags used in bookmarks by that user. (more details coming in story #????)
  • Each tag in "My tags" tagcloud is a link to page that lists all the resources bookmarked by that user with that tag (title: "Resources bookmarked with a tag X"). (more details coming in story #????)

When we replace the folder-type collections with del.icio.us-type tagging we must also find a new way to create "tips for use" stories. I propose the following solution:

  • If user has used the same tag for content, activity and tool, she can write "tips for use". In the page "Resources bookmarked with a tag X" we must display the link "Write tips for use".
  • In the "Write tips for use " page all the resources with that tag are listed with checkboxes. User can mark the resources that she wants to include in the "tips for use" story. Under the checkboxes there is textarea for writing the "tips for use". (more details coming in story #????)

Change History

The Portal has already switched its basket into a tag-based cloud, so this would add consistency between our systems. And it's a good idea anyway.

I like this idea, but it still sounds very confusing for me (and basic users). Everybody knows what is a "collection" - so in that sense it is very good metaphor. In the current story there are mix-up of the terms "bookmarks" and "tags". This will be very difficult for the users to figure out what is what. One should think how the "collection" metaphor and the "broad folksonomy" could be combined.

I like the idea that building the "tips of use" would take place from the tags. I think it maybe will also bring up them better than in the current implementation. It is anyway one of the core ideas in the LeMill are tge "tips of use".

Why should we rename the "collection" if we implement the "broad folksonomy"?

Couldn't it still be ""Add to collection..." and "Collection" even if you can add "tags" attached into them?

You could access the "collection" with the current way of view tag cloud of all your collections or of each individual collections. Not sure if this makes much more sense, but could be somekind of combination. Anyway, I am not ready to get totally rid of the "collections" at this point.

  • Priority changed from blocker to waiting

OK... I will continue thinking about that and create some prototypes of collections with broad folksonomy.

  • Status changed from new to closed
  • Resolution set to wontfix

This can be closed because collections and tips for use were redesigned in a different way.
