Discussion page for learning resources

I have been thinking for some time that we need some space to discuss about the learning resources (methods, tools). Something like talk-page in Wikipedia. I do not like the way talk-page is implemented in MediaWiki?. It is difficult to follow many talk pages at the same time.

I propose the following functionality to LeMill:

Each learning resource that is assigned to a group will have a link "Discussion" in the actions portlet. This link points to a topic in the group forum. New topic is automatically created when learning resource is assigned to some group. The first message can be something like this:

"Hans Põldoja (link) has created a new learning resource Birds in Matsalu Nature reserve (link) and assigned it to this group. Feel free to discuss this learning resource here!"

Open questions:

 • What do we do with learning resources that are not assigned to any group? Methods? Tools?
 • Should we have default groups "Content", "Methods", "Tools" for discussing these?

It might be better to create the topic only when someone first clicks on the "Discuss" action of the resource. Plus what language should be used to create the new topic?

I think that we should create a topic when group is assigned to a learning resource. This way other members of the group will find out the somebody is doing something interesting. Many teachers are probably not going to subscribe to RSS feeds to follow what's going on.

I think that people will not assign test content to some group, so hopefully group forums will not be spammed with threads about test content.

The language of the message should be the same as the language of the learning resource. If no language is selected, then English.

Answer to open questions: when resource is not assigned to any group then discussion page will be connected to that resource, for example http://lemill.net/content/royal-residences/discussion

When resource is assigned to a group, the discussion will be moved to that group forum.

Moving a discussion between groups and the material itself has several problems:

 • the URL to the discussion will change, making bookmarks to it non-functional
 • a discussion can't live outside of a GroupBlog, so most likely we'll need to create a generic group (called "discussions", for instance), where all non-shared resources' discussions are placed

Did we already discuss this and make a decision? I thought so. If I'll remember right the decision was:

1) For each learning resource, method and tool there is "discussion" link in the n the actions portlet.

2) Clicking the link will open a forum page where one can write "comments" to the page. In the top of the page there is the title of the resource with a link to the actual page. example: Discussion about the Television and its History. This is also the title of the page "Discussion about the XXX".

3) If the resource is assigned to some group in the forum of the group there is the title with the link "Discussion about the XXX".
