Remove support for video files as media pieces

I think that we should remove support for video files as media pieces.

Reasons:

  • I do not see that we have resources to implement server-side video-to-FLV conversion (#1140, #1260). My experience shows that there are no simple and free video conversion tools that teachers could install on their own computers.
  • Embedding from Youtube looks and works better than our own FlowPlayer?
  • This would make LeMill easier and faster if we do not have to deal with large video files.

This requires the following actions:

  • Removing support for video uploads.
  • Finding current videos and contacting the authors about this change (there should be only a few of them, all from Estonia)
  • Changing the media piece icon (Hans)

This story is waiting for some further discussion. It appears that in Georgian server teachers are using this feature a lot.

What should we do:

  • make this option configurable so that administrator can enable / disable video uploads (and have them disabled in lemill.net)
  • leave everything as is

After performance issues we had last night it seems that we should again think about disabling video media pieces. I propose the following actions:

  • disabling uploading FLV videos as media pieces in next version
  • finding all currently uploaded FLV videos, uploading them to YouTube? and embedding to resources where they were used. It is manual work, but we probably don't have too many videos now. There is already http://www.youtube.com/user/lemill in YouTube?, so we must have a different username.
  • changing media piece icon
  • removing code related to video media pieces and FlowPlayer?

I am afraid that making it configurable option is not the way to go. If video media pieces are enabled on some LeMill instance, then they will become a performance issue at some point.
