Description (last modified by hans) (diff)

This story is describing the default template for learning materials.

Basic features:

  • bold text
  • italic text
  • hyperlinks
  • second level headings (h2)
  • possibility to edit individual sections (edit link with each heading, just like in Mediawiki)
  • bulleted lists
  • numbered lists
  • inserting pieces (images, sound clips, video clips) or other materials (glossary?, table?) between the paragraphs (not inside the paragraph)

We must have buttons for basic features.

Advanced features:

  • definition lists
  • blockquotes
  • code examples (<code>)

Advanced features can be used only by writing the markup code.

Features, that we will NEVER have in multimedia page template:

  • tables
  • possibility to change font and text size
  • possibility to change colors
  • horisontal lines

I think that multimedia page is a better name than hypermedia book:

  • multimedia is more widely used term among teachers than hypermedia (although hypermedia would be more exact)
  • teachers will feel, that "page" is more doable than "book"

Today we were thinking about using Wordpress editor in our main template. I was counting the pros and cons (cons listed here):

  • it is not possible to create subheadings
  • it is not possible to edit only a section of long material (as it is possible in Mediawiki)
  • adding images must be changed
  • user has too much freedom to add images everywhere and mess up the layout

I am not really sure if we should use HTML or some structured markup language. I suggest that for school testing this autumn we will create both templates (it is crazy to mess two markup syntaxes together on one template) and then choose one based on user feedback. We should probably change our syntax (mix of Writeboard and Mediawiki syntax) to Mediawiki syntax that is more widely used.

I think that we need a separate template to create tables. Tables are definately needed for some type of material. If it is possible to create tables in the main template, then users will start to do all kind of bullshit layouts.

We could insert other materials (maybe only materials based on certain templates) in a same way as we insert images, sound and videos between the text paragraphs.

One more comment. This is NOT the template that we are going to use for describing activities and tools. Activity and tool forms must have much less possibilities (bold, italic, links, bulleted lists, numbered lists).

Suggestion: Uploaded media for material appears as thumbnails in 'media attachments' between edit window and the syntax guide. Beside the thumbnail tag like style '[media1]' is generated and displayed and these tags work as place specifiers for media in text. These thumbnails can be dragged to text or pressed, when they write that tag like other basic feature buttons.

I am proposing that we will have a place holders for images. The basic layout could be something like this:

The Big Title
Text here and here and |MEDIA]
Text here and here and |MEDIA]
Text here and here and |MEDIA]

Text here and here and |MEDIA]
Text here and here and |MEDIA]
Text here and here and |MEDIA]
Text here and here and |MEDIA]

Text here and here and |MEDIA]
Text here and here and |MEDIA]

The text is the text added to the text field. Images, audio and videos one may add to the frames saying MEDIA. The place holder frame is already displayed in the template form. There will be a "place holders" sameway as in the "presentation template" (#486).

In the "place holder" of the multimedia page template it should say:

Upload media (image, audio or video clip) ...

... or search for media

In addition to this the more advanced users should have some way to add media (images, audio and video) between the paragraphs.

One change to the story. I think that we do not need multiple levels of headings. Title is <h1> and users should be able to create second level headings inside the textarea (<h2>). It is page (lesson), not a book (course).
