Description

LeMill has a plugin that can convert presentation file to images.

User can upload presentation file in OpenDocument? or Powerpoint format to the presentation template. Presentation file is automatically converted to images and presentation template is prefilled with slide images. After that user can do all actions that are possible in the presentation template: write captions, delete slides, reorder slides, add slides, etc.

I think, it is a very important ticket, because many teachers have persentations in PowerPoint? (or other) format. But simply convert to a presentation is possibly not enough for the teachers. The main philosophy of LeMill is create and edit learning materials. If we convert the PPT presentations, teachers cannot edit the slides, but somtimes it would be good. I don't really know what should we do with this. For example, we should convert the presentation to OpenDocument? format, split the slides, and attach the slide sources to the images of the presentation. What do you think about it?

I also agree that this is important feature. Does somebody know what is the technical solution? It will probably make installing LeMill MUCH MORE complicated, so it must be an add-on that is not required to get LeMill up and running.

Slideshare has implemented serverside conversion of PPT, PPS, ODP and PDF to images, but I don't know any details about their technical solution: http://www.slideshare.net/

I've found a possible solution here: http://www.xml.com/pub/a/2006/01/11/from-microsoft-to-openoffice.html?page=2

We could convert PPT-s to OpenOffice? documents. But after this, we should convert these OpenOffice? documents to readable format (images, HTML, etc.). I try to find any solution for it.

Should I create a development ticket to investigate options of using OpenOffice? to convert M$ Documents to images, pdf, etc. ?

We were discussing the same problem with Teemu and Tarmo during the lunch today. Yes, it would be good if somebody can investigate the options of converting presentations to images.
