Description

Manager should be able to customize the values for subject areas and target groups in ZMI. This is will make it possible to take LeMill into use in other contexts than secondary school education (for example thematic networks in Estonian e-university or Finnish virtuaaliyliopisto).

Change History

I am presenting LeMill in Estonian e-University conference on 07.12. It would be good, if I can say that we have this feature and they can set up their own LeMill.

We probably do not want to pollute lemill.net with Estonian content for university level and the the system would be more usable for them if they can customize subject areas and target groups.

The values are part of i18n, so customizing them will break translations on their part. I'd rather see a common set that is usable by everyone. The target group is sufficient, I think, since in university level you can't target 1st or 2nd year students that clearly, or there's no point in that. Also the subject areas are pretty broad and should cover everything in education. And it's an EU-wide list used by the EUN. So I'd rather stick to the one set.

But of course if you set up your own version, you can just edit the .py file and replace the list of values with something else...

In Finnish educational system I can see quite clear target groups in the university level:

  • Polytechnic bachelor's studies
  • Polytechnic master's studies
  • University bachelor's studies
  • University master's studies
  • Licenciate studies
  • Doctoral studies

It is similar in Estonia (without polytechnic master's and licenciate). Universities can also save some screen space by removing school grades 1...12.

There are also important subject areas in the university level that are not present in secondary school education: medicine, law, technical subjects...

"You can edit whatever.py" is not a very user-friendly suggestion in my point of view :)

  • Priority changed from critical to major

We defcided that the vocabularies for subject areas + target groups will editable in ZMI by the manager of the server.

I agree. Then Tarmo can accept this story and create an enhancement ticket?

Open question: How do we handle translations? Or is it just so that if you customize the fields, you lose translations and you're stuck with just one language?

Open question: What happens if a resource is exported and imported to another LeMill that doesn't have these customized fields?

I think that we do not need translations for customized metadata fields. Typically this customization will happen locally (Estonian e-University, etc).

If resource with non-standard metadata is imported to other LeMill we can just ignore the metadata and leave these fields empty. Subject area and target group are not mandatory fields anyway.
